South West Nigeria is playing a major role in advancing the Renewed Hope Agenda through strategic infrastructure investments, social intervention programmes, and regional partnerships that align with the eight priority areas of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Across the region, several key projects and initiatives are currently underway to drive economic growth, improve living conditions, and strengthen connectivity.
Infrastructure Expansion
One of the flagship projects is the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, a 700-kilometre road network expected to improve trade, transportation, and tourism by linking Lagos to Cross River State. The project is widely regarded as a critical step toward boosting economic integration among states along the coastal corridor.
Another major development is the Sokoto-Badagry Superhighway, a 1,000-kilometre route beginning from Badagry in Lagos. The highway is designed to strengthen economic ties between the South West and the North West regions of the country.
In the housing sector, construction is ongoing at the Lagos Renewed Hope City project in Ibeju-Lekki, where 2,000 housing units are planned. Reports indicate that more than 80 percent of the initial 700-unit phase has already been completed as part of efforts to reduce Nigeria’s housing shortage.
Housing and Urban Development
The federal government has also commenced Renewed Hope Estate projects in states such as Ogun, Oyo, and Osun. Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, hosted the second phase of the national groundbreaking ceremony for the housing initiative.
To encourage local production and reduce construction costs, plans are underway to establish a Building Materials Manufacturing Hub within the Lekki Free Trade Zone. The hub is expected to promote local content development while making building materials more affordable.
Economic Empowerment and Agriculture
Through the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), several programmes targeting women, farmers, and vulnerable groups have been introduced across the South West.
First Lady Oluremi Tinubu launched the RHI Women Agricultural Support Programme in Ogun State to empower women farmers and entrepreneurs while increasing food production.
In addition, financial support has been extended to elderly citizens and persons living with disabilities, with beneficiaries receiving grants of ₦200,000 each to help sustain small businesses and improve livelihoods.
Agricultural development efforts in the region are also being coordinated through initiatives led by Mrs. Tamunominini Makinde, wife of the Oyo State Governor and South West Zonal Coordinator for the Renewed Hope Initiative. Her programmes are focused on strengthening the agricultural value chain and supporting food security.
Education and Grassroots Engagement
At the grassroots level, the Presidential Community Engagement Office in the South West has continued implementing the BAT-STEM initiative, an educational programme aimed at supporting science, technology, engineering, and mathematics learning. Thousands of pupils and teachers in Ondo, Ekiti, and Osun states have reportedly benefited from the programme.
The Presidency has also organised tax reform sensitisation campaigns in Ibadan to educate residents on the newly proposed tax reform bills and their expected impact on citizens and businesses.
Regional Partnerships and Development
Regional cooperation remains a central part of the agenda. The South-West Development Commission (SWDC) is collaborating with the Foundation for Technology Innovation and Sustainable Development (FTID) on the “Transformed Communities” project, also known as TransComs. The initiative is focused on improving rural infrastructure and boosting agricultural productivity across communities in the region.
Overall, the South West is increasingly positioning itself as a major centre for industrialisation and digital transformation under the Renewed Hope Agenda. Efforts are also being made to integrate transportation systems, including rail networks, airports, and seaports, to support economic activities and long-term regional development.
